Mayor Jerry Morales proclaimed June 11, 2015, to be “Junior Urias Day” in honor of Urias’s appearance on the popular reality show “BBQ Pitmasters” on Destination America.
Urias won the title of Texas champion during the season, and returned to compete in the show’s all-star season. He won during the first episode and continued on to the semifinal round. During the show, Urias made lifelong friendships with other contestants and learned to hone and perfect his craft.
While filming the show, Jennifer, Urias’s wife, managed the business at home. When Urias returned after the competition, Urias said it was tough.
“They tell you that you can tell your immediate family, but it’s hard,” he said. “A lot of people ask, ‘Where did you go?’ I just said, ‘We went and competed somewhere,’ and we left it at that.”
Dealing with the task of cooking while filming for TV has taught Urias much about the art of grilling and the production industry. With these skills, he has improved his catering business by learning to work with whatever timeframe he’s given.
Urias is bringing barbecue classes, steak classes, and even the skill of starting up the grill and how to cook an entire steak from start to finish to the people of Midland, TX.
“I see it as Midlanders helping Midlanders. That’s what I want to do.”
